Question
Dear Sir,

I would be interested in your knowledge if there are positions for people in the service for young men with limited IQ’s and physical abilities.  My son has always had a desire to join one of the services.  He has an IQ score of about 90 across the testing spectrum.  He has also been born with a deletion on the y22 chromosome.  This limits his ability to learn quickly and be aware of social situations.  This deletion also affects his physical abilities.  He is somewhat short in stature and not physically strong.

Those things said, he is very dedicated to his goals and has a strong will to complete all assignments.  He is in a very competitive High School and will be graduating with a regular diploma.  He has about a 3.1 GPA, runs track and has completed his Eagle Scout.  He has been a National Junior Honor recipient and is active socially in his church youth group.

If I had started with the positives, and not listed the negatives, you would have given me a recruiter’s number.  My son’s greatest wish is to get into the military.  His desire to good job would make him a great person to have in any group, but I am not sure if could handle the physical demands.

Could you give me some idea if there is a place or a way to get him into some area of the service where he could bring desire to serve and willingness to do a great job?

Thank,

Concerned Father

Answer
There is no place in the military for those that are disabled in anyway, mentally or physically.  It is just the plain facts.  The most your son could do would be volunteer for state defense forces or militias, differnt states call them differnt things.  I do not doubt your son's desire and commitment to the military, but imagine him in a combat enviornment.  How would he perform?  Safety for our soldiers first,  not everyone can serve.

I am sorry I cannot be more positive.

Expertise

I am a National Guard recruiter , been doing it for seven years and am a subject matter expert on qualifications for National Guard and I keep up to date on Regular Army regs and programs. I was in the Navy for 4 years and have 13 years in the Guard. I will not sugar coat my answers to you. They are usually short and to the point. If you need more in depth, ask me. Because each situation is different, alot of times you need to actually talk to a recruiter and let them evaluate your situation in person, by looking at your documents, issues etc. If I suggest this, it would be in your best interest to do so. Finally...thank you for your interest in serving this great nation of ours. Very few people can actually make the cut to serve let alone choose to do so. So thank you for wanting to and hopefully you will get a chance. Whatever branch you choose, thank you and good luck.
