Question
I am considering joining the military but the only auspices I can see this happening with is if I can be an officer. Now I have my qualms with current "Higher education" meaning that a traditional degree is kind of white noise in the current workforce situation but at the same time I see a great deal of value in technical training. I am very interested in ground tactics and units and thought I might be well-served to get a tech degree in some capacity that would be applicable to my occupation but my question is that if I have a technical degree in say gunsmithing or the like can I become an officer without a traditional 4 year degree?

Answer
Dear Trevor --

Unfortunately none of the apprenticeship type programs qualify for the "higher education" requirements to become a commissioned officer.

However, the Warrant Officer program would have a path to success for someone with your interests, who does not wish to get a four year college degree.

Please write back, if you wish to discuss your options further.
