Question
QUESTION: I am trying to enlist in the marines. I have a problem, when I was 18, i enlisted in the navy, went to boot and was discharged ELS upon failing the drug screen. I have talked to a recruiter, but he doesnt seem to know. Is there any hope to get back in? Please help!

ANSWER: Justin:

It depends on how much time has passed since then, but you will, at minimum, need a waiver to re-enlist.  You are going to have alot of difficulty in re-enlisting into any branch of the service unless several years have passed and you've kept a clean record since then.

QUESTION: I have contacted my recruiter and he says due to the discharge code, I am not qualified to re-enlist without an discharge code upgrade. I have filed for the paperwork and prior service records, but is this going to work and if it does, is my prior going to keep me out of my preferred job field? Thanks

Answer
Justin:

The upgrade and paperwork will likely take six months or so to complete, possibly longer.  No idea if it will work, or not, quite frankly.  It's up to HQMC.  The prior may keep you from the field you want, it depends on what field you are interested in.

Expertise

Questions relating to US Marine Corps; rank, awards, uniforms, career choices. I can also help people spot and expose fakes (people pretending to be Marines or have awards they didn`t earn). Considering the Marines as a career? Or another branch, like the Air National Guard? Drop me a line. HOWever..know that I am NOT a recruiter. I can offer my expert opinion and advice, but can't (and won't) over rule what a recruiter says, they are the 'on duty' expert.

Experience

Field Radio Operator: MOS 2531. Served as a Platoon Sergeant in a Communications Platoon assigned to MEU Service Support Group 24 (Special Operations Capable). Did a hitch in the Army reserves as an 11B (Infantryman), 3 years. Finished out my career in the Air National Guard as a BioEnvironmental Engineer MOS 4B3X1, did that for a few years. I"ve been collecting and selling Marine Corps and other military uniforms, medals, and field gear since I was 8 years old.
