Careers: Military--Army, Navy, Airforce, Marines, Coast Guard/? about Marine son/cough when doing PT

Question
Hi Jason,
Just happened upon you during my quest for info.  My son is currently at 29 Palms for training in Field Radio Operator.  He graduated PI on 11/21/07, came home for RA, went back to MCT, and then off to 29 Palms where he just recently picked up his class.
He developed pneumonia/ a very bad cough during Boot...and now has severe coughing fits while running.  Will they allow him to take a medication such as singulair or advair for a few months to get the inflammation down and allow his lungs to fully heal from the scarring?  He already has an inhaler.  This is so new to us...so any info you could share will be greatly appreciated.

Answer
Hi Amy!

The Corpsman and docs will make sure he takes what he is supposed to.  I well remember 29 Palms and the adjustment for me was the altitude.  Since it's a higher elevation, the air is thinner and that will for sure cause him to cough more during PT, esp. the runs.  It took me about a month to really get acclimated and back up to 'speed' so to speak.

My suggestion is that he go to the clinic and let them know he's having difficulty.  He needs to let his class leader know as well, and the reasons why, so they don't think he's trying to get out of PT.

Lastly, if you want to connect with some other Marines as well as parents, go to www.leatherneck.com/forums , create profile, and check out the site.   It's a good way to connect with Marines and parents.

Drop me a line and let me know how things are going.

 Best regards,

   Jason

Questions relating to US Marine Corps; rank, awards, uniforms, career choices. I can also help people spot and expose fakes (people pretending to be Marines or have awards they didn`t earn). Considering the Marines as a career? Or another branch, like the Air National Guard? Drop me a line. HOWever..know that I am NOT a recruiter. I can offer my expert opinion and advice, but can't (and won't) over rule what a recruiter says, they are the 'on duty' expert.
