Careers: Military--Army, Navy, Airforce, Marines, Coast Guard/USCG Signing Up and Boot Camp

QuestionQUESTION: This Sunday (March 2nd 2008) I will be heading to my local recruiters office for a medical exam, ASBAV and then sign my the next 4 years (or more) of my life in dedication to the USCG.
A couple quick questions:
1. When I am speaking with my recruiter, I am asking (and really won't sign anything until we reach this agreement) that immediately after basic training, I'll be sent to a BM "A" school. Can my recruiter guarantee this?
2. After signing up, how long will it be till I head out to basic training?
ANSWER: Dear Jesse --
1. Your recruiter can "guarantee" in writing, in your contract, a billet at your desired training course, however you must perform above a certain standard to "earn" that billet, even with the guarantee. So if you must be in the top 10% of your basic training class to earn your billet, and you are not, you may not get your chance at that school. You will have to work hard to earn the right to your guarantee.
2. Your ship date will depend on your desires, the basic training start schedule, and whether there are any inconsistencies found during your testing and medical exam.
Best of luck to you.

QUESTION: Cynthia Bedell,
What entails being at the top 10% of my basic training class? I am exceedingly hard working and a smart individual, but from what I understand those 9 weeks will be primarily based on our physical performance and our ability to react immediately - which again will not be a problem (6'4, 210lbs, fit). I will go above and beyond to secure billet.
AnswerDear Jesse --
If you work hard, keep a positive attitude, AND help others in your training section succeed (not just yourself) you will likely graduate in the top of your class. There will be more mental challenges than you might imagine. Sometimes the best response is to think briefly and then react. Problem solving abilities and abilities to motivate team mates are also important during basic training.
You will likely be rated in 4 areas.
Fitness
Teamwork and Leadership
Skills development (weapons, land navigation, military skills)
Problem solving/Challenge response
Each area will be important in your overall rating. You will start out well since you are fit, and strong. However, since you are tall you will likely be expected to do more than your share. Bear this burden cheerfully, and you will get even more credit for teamwork and leadership.
Best of luck to you.
