Question
i had a misdemeanor shoplifting charge in 1996. i am now in the army and need a security clearance for my job . what are the possibilities of it being denied ?

Answer
Dear Trina --

Based on your question, your offense is outside the reportable window for a misdemeanor, and will not have to be reported on your application.

If it is in the reportable window (7 to 10 years) you would have to report it.  If you have never had another offense, and you do not have a pattern of misdemeanors, it is unlikely your clearance application would be denied.  If it is denied you can appeal the denial and have your appeal adjudicated by another security investigator.

Large consumer credit, and poor repayment history are much more likely to get you denied a clearance than one very old misdemeanor offense.

Good luck to you.
