Question
I'm curious who is in charge of handing out death notices these days. The reason I ask is that my family was involved in the military in the past and although I'm not a fighter, I want to help families deal with the pain of losing their loved one and I heard there was a specific division for this.
If I got it right, the group is in charge of handing out the notices, as well as comforting the family and helping with final arrangements. Is this true and if so how would I go about signing up for this task? It's a hard job I'm sure, but I think my empathy will serve the country better than my trigger finger.

It's handled by a Casualty Assistance Officer assigned to the detail by the military.
I'd suggest getting in touch with your local VA office, followed by the local American Legion, VFW, Marine Corps League, etc. Many times these folks will know who to link you up with from there so you can provide some assistance.
Worst case scenario...start your OWN group to provide assistance.

Intelligence Specialist: MOS 0231 10 years working as an Intelligence Analyst with a Fixed Wing Fighter Squadron, Force Service Support Group, and at Headquarters, Marine Corps. Field Radio Operator: MOS 2531. Served as a Platoon Sergeant in a Communications Platoon assigned to MEU Service Support Group 24 (Special Operations Capable). Did a hitch in the Army reserves as an 11B (Infantryman), 3 years. Finished out my career in the Air National Guard as a BioEnvironmental Engineer MOS 4B3X1, did that for a few years.
I"ve been collecting and selling Marine Corps and other military uniforms, medals, and field gear since I was 8 years old.
