Question
Hi, thank you for taking the time to read this. My husband and I recently got married. We have had an apartment together for a year now but he has been stationed in NC for a few months. We got married in December and he is being deployed to Iraq very soon. I was wondering who I can talk to about getting a BHA because I need help paying our rent since he is away. Can i go to a family readiness center for that? I have all the proof of our living arrangments I just do not know who to bring it too. If you can point me in a direction I would really appreciate it.

Answer
Jen:

First, he is the one who should be handling this right now, not you.  Likely if you are married and have been since December, you are already drawing BAH and it's hit his pay.  While family readiness is the right place to go once he's deployed, right now since he's stateside his unit has to handle all of this.  You should already have a dependant ID card, if not, you need to get him off his hindquarters and get you to the ID card office on base to get one.  Without it you won't be able to do much of anything on post.

If he is out in the field right now, contact his unit, or contact the family readiness folks AT the unit and tell them the situation.  They will get you started in the right direction.

Expertise

Questions relating to US Marine Corps; rank, awards, uniforms, career choices. I can also help people spot and expose fakes (people pretending to be Marines or have awards they didn`t earn). Considering the Marines as a career? Or another branch, like the Air National Guard? Drop me a line. HOWever..know that I am NOT a recruiter. I can offer my expert opinion and advice, but can't (and won't) over rule what a recruiter says, they are the 'on duty' expert.
