Question
I am in the Navy Reserve, was advanced to E-7 (Chief Petty Officer), am a paid drilling reservist, and am being paid for that pay grade.  I have read all the instructions stating that to retire at the E-7 pay grade and receive E-7 retirement pay, I am required to completed 24 months of service in that pay grade in the Ready Reserve; otherwise, I would revert back to E-6 if I do not complete the 24 month Time in Pay Grade requirement.  Due to some recent personnel life issues, I am considering transferring from paid drilling reservist status to the IRR (Inactive Ready Reserve).  Since I do not have the required 24 months of time in pay grade yet, by transferring to the IRR, would my time in pay grade continue as long as I meet the annual IRR requirements of attaining 50 points per year and any other requirements that come up so that I can complete my 24 months as an E-7 or will I revert back to E-6 status?  I cannot find a definite answer to this question and really don't want to stir waves in my community of fellow chiefs.

Answer
More than likely you would revert back to the E-6 Status. There was a lady who wrote to me and said that she had become retirement elligible, she decided after she got the letter, that she would serve out the remainder of her contract in the IRR. She never retired...

I know that things get difficult and the military will interfere with the personal life. If you are that close to retirement....finish it. dont end up like that lady, I am not sure of what the outcome was, but I dont think it was good.

Get your retirement... the rest will pan itself out.
