QuestionGoodafternoon Maam. My name is Billie and I am from wisconsin and also a 26 years old student at ITT Technical college for Criminal Justice. I am trying to debate whether I should go part time and finish college (4 year degree). But also with big dreams to pursue a career as an Officer in the Airforce or Navy. I am confused at this time which ever would be best especially tht now I am 26 years of age. Really dream to finish what I have started at ITT especially for a good school. As of right now I am a caregiver that loves my job with all my heart. Still at this point in time also hopes to be in a field of criminal justice. If I join the part time in the service and finish college would I still be able to join the Officer? when I probably turn 29or maybe 30?
AnswerDear Billie --
You could enlist in the reserves, and once you finish your degree, apply for Officer Candidate Training (or School). You will still be young enough to receive your commission. However, as a reservist you could be called up at any time. That would further delay your education. If you are a critical caregiver at this time, please consider what the disruption of a deployment would do your your life and the lives of those for whom you provide care.
If there is an ROTC program near you, you could join that program as a non-scholarship candidate. You would take two 6-week training camps in the summer between your semesters. Then when you graduate you would be commissioned as an officer.
Please write back, if you want to discuss this matter further. Best of luck to you.
