Question
i left the marines about a year and a half ago and i was wondering if that is considered AWOL or desertion and what is the penalty for that? i had already been to Iraq and was a good marine on and off paper up until i left i want to turn my self in but would like to know the consequences.

Answer
Alex,

You need to turn your self in regardless of what the consequences are. They will look at the reasons why you left. you will more than likely get a dishonorable discharge and some jail time before.

THe best thing that I can tell you is to contact the NAVY CID and just tell them that you are turning yourself in an where you are at. THe sooner you do the easier it will be on you....

Go to this website...  http://www.ncis.navy.mil/wanted.asp

See if you are there...if not, then call the number and get it overwith, its time or you wouldnt be asking the questions....

I still have contacts with in the recruiting field and if I don't know the answer then I have folks who do where I can find the answer. I am very blunt and straight forward and will make no attempts to BS you. I will give you the best information that I possible can can. If you think that you cant handle the answer that I give you, then don't ask the question...... If you are planning on joining the military, your number 1 decision factor in making this kind of move is that you need to be more concerned about serving your country than your country serving you!! All the benefits are the best that you can find. Education is at a premium right now and its the most rewarding thing that you can do. If I dont answer right away probably means that I am busy, but have patience, I will get to you.
