Question
I have a friend who recently joined the Marines. He is in boot camp in San Diego right now. I am concerned for him because he only has one kidney and he never told the recruiting officers about it and his medical records were never checked. I was told that a person would not be able to join the military if they have one kidney. Why would one kidney be such a big risk, and what could happen to my friend because of it? He is a physically fit person, but he has never been very active person and i have heard stories of what a person gets put through in bootcamp. I am worried for him and i don't understand why medical records weren't checked.

Answer
Well I am not sure how he got past the Medical at the MEPS, but if he is in and there is no problems, then he will be fine. The entry level standards were written back in a day where missing a kidney was concidered a disability. The military subjects you to harsh conditions, like dehydration...being in the desert compounds that...Being at home, the chances are you will not get subjected to that harsh of a condition. Having only one kidney makes this kidney work twice as hard to do the job of two. Could casue problems down the road. But in todays military , we have greater capabilities to stay hydrated. I believe as long as he stays hydrated, he will be fine, but he has a greater risk of issues than one with two kidneys.

There are alot of questions that I could think of on how he got passed the the docs with that scar...unless he was born with just one, then I could see it....

He is the one that has to deal with it now....
