QuestionI was thinking of joining the reserves. In the interview process with my recruiter, he asked if I had any history of depression and if I saw a psychiatrist.
I did do through a bout with depression after a divorce. I saw a counselor for a few sessions and that was it. I soon found a great lady and we ended up getting married. We currently have 2 children together.
My question is to what extent does the military go into my medical history. If I took medication a few years ago for depression and I have not taken any since, can that preclude me from clearing my medical exam?
AnswerDear D.J. --
A prior condition from which you have recovered can get you "disqualified" at the Military Entry Processing Station (MEPS). However many conditions are waiverable. Your condition sounds like a short-term situational issue, and so should be waiverable.
I recommend being fully honest on your medical history form, and then getting a waiver as required.
Good luck to you. Please write back, if you have questions during the enlistment process.
