Question
Greetings, In my youth, when I was 17, I obtained a misdemeanor for drinking a beer. Now that has been expunged through a first time offenders program and because I turned 18. Recently I got a misdemeanor for driving off road in a state park and an infraction for underage drinking and driving. 2 misdemeanors, one of them expunged, and 1 infraction. So with that said I'm wanting to join the coast guard as a boatswains mate and eventually become a surfman. will these convictions disqualify me?

Answer
Well to the US military....anything that is related to drinking & driving is a DUI...If you were drinking and driving and got caught....its a DUI and its severe in the military... Misdemenor or not....its considered a felony to the DOD. Soooo yes its a definite disqualifier. They may be able to do waivers for that, to be sure check with the CG

If you are planning on joining the military, your number 1 decision factor in making this kind of move is that you need to be more concerned about serving your country than your country serving you!! All the benefits are the best that you can find. Education is at a premium right now and its the most rewarding thing that you can do.
