Question
I did 4 years active and 4 years in the reserves in the Coast guard. I got out a little over a year ago and thinking of going back in the reserves in the same rate. Do I need to retake the asvab ?

Answer
Dear Donald --

If you received an honorable discharge with a re-enlistment code (RE code) of 1 on your DD 214, you can re-enter the same service without taking the ASVAB.

If you re-enter the same service within three years of your discharge, you will not have to take basic training.  You will take a military skills refresher, and specialty training, if you change specialties.

Good luck to you.
