Question
Good Afternoon Jason,

I have been moving through the application process for the Marines since early August and so far have completed all of the required forms and paperwork as well as the med exam. All that's left is to complete the PFT which I am currently training for and I plan to leave for Quantico in January. Last night my fiance and I found out she is pregnant and she already has 2 children from her ex-husband. I really want to become an officer so I am wondering if this is something I should disclose to the OSO or do you have any suggestions? We were planning on marrying after OCS since the Marines would not allow me in with so many dependants.

Also, I have roughly $8000 in debt, could that affect my commissioning?

Thank you.

Answer
Kulik:

Hold off on the marriage until you are commissioned.  As far as the debt goes, as long as you are paying it and not trying to declare bankruptcy, it shouldn't be an issue.

If you are going to be commissioned prior to her having the baby, this shouldn't be an issue, you can get married then.

Jason

Expertise

Questions relating to US Marine Corps; rank, awards, uniforms, career choices. I can also help people spot and expose fakes (people pretending to be Marines or have awards they didn`t earn). Considering the Marines as a career? Or another branch, like the Air National Guard? Drop me a line. HOWever..know that I am NOT a recruiter. I can offer my expert opinion and advice, but can't (and won't) over rule what a recruiter says, they are the 'on duty' expert.

Experience

Field Radio Operator: MOS 2531. Served as a Platoon Sergeant in a Communications Platoon assigned to MEU Service Support Group 24 (Special Operations Capable). Did a hitch in the Army reserves as an 11B (Infantryman), 3 years. Finished out my career in the Air National Guard as a BioEnvironmental Engineer MOS 4B3X1, did that for a few years. I"ve been collecting and selling Marine Corps and other military uniforms, medals, and field gear since I was 8 years old.
