Question
my granddaughter age 17 went down to camp pendalton for three days to visit her boyfriend, of course the boyfriend assured the mother these two would be chaperoned at all times, never the less this girl now wants to marry her boyfriend when she turns 18 next June and he says they will live off of base. He has signed a contract for 5 years service. He has also said he would be home every night from the base. what actually is the protocol for such things, and would the marines have someone actually chaperone a 17 year old and a military person???  Thank you Barbara

Answer
Barbara:

First, no, the Marine Corps doesn't assign 'chaperones' to Marines under ANY circumstances.   Never heard that one before.

If the parents of your granddaughter had concerns, they shouldn't have let her go, esp. unsupervised, in that regard.  Well, what's done is done at this point.  The good news is they are waiting to get married.  June is a long way off so plenty of things can happen until then.  I'd be more concerned with her getting pregnant than anything else at this point.

If/when they do get married, yes, they can live off base.  They can also apply for on base housing, but the waiting list is long at Pendleton and is rank dependent.  Sometimes you can get lucky tho.  Regardless, living off base is allowed.

Good luck.  And, it could be worse for sure.  At least you know what's going on at this point, and he's a Marine (meaning he's employed with steady benefits and such).

Oh, and as far as being home every night, that's not always the case, there may be times, depending on what job he has, that he's 'in the field' and away from home.  As well as deploying to various places overseas and whatnot.

Best regards,

Jason

Questions relating to US Marine Corps; rank, awards, uniforms, career choices. I can also help people spot and expose fakes (people pretending to be Marines or have awards they didn`t earn). Considering the Marines as a career? Or another branch, like the Air National Guard? Drop me a line. HOWever..know that I am NOT a recruiter. I can offer my expert opinion and advice, but can't (and won't) over rule what a recruiter says, they are the 'on duty' expert.
