You will have to apply to the board of military corrections to get your re-entry code changed from a 4 to a 1.  That process can take up to two years.

Good luck to you.

QUESTION: thanks colonel, the Congressmans advisor gave me a form DD194 i believe (not looking at it) but it is for Reenlistment Corrections, is that the right form to submit? Also i learned i am still eligible for the Guard, with the same MOS (18B) i want in the army, so do you think it is a good idea (from your ARMY Officer's pov) for me to go ahead with the guard while i wait on the re code to be resolved? i was thinking of signing for the 60 month term and from there go strait to US army if approved....

ANSWER: Dear Tim --

There are a number of forms you can use to petition the board of military corrections.  Unfortunately I am away on travel and do not have my full set of references to provide you with a web site to get additional forms and a list of the supporting data you will need for your appeal.

However, if you can get in the National Guard now, you will not need to get your DD Form 214 corrected.  You will get a new DD 214 with a new RE code, and a new characterization when you are discharged.  I recommend taking the shortest term you are allowed to take for the Guard, and then re-enlist for active service when you complete your Guard obligation.

Please write back, if you have questions about this option.  Good luck to you.

Answer
Dear Tim --

The National Guard requirements will vary from month to month, as will their willingness to grant a waiver.

Keep checking back with them, to see if they need your skills.

You're more than welcome for any assistance I provided.  Good luck to you.
