Question
hi jason, i am an irr marine, ive been off active duty for around a year and 7 months. and i was wondering if you could provide any info on reenlisting as a cook, (3381) after being a helicopter mech (6113) i've was honorably discharged, and was told i was highly retainable before my EAS. im not sure what the policy is regarding reenlistment into other mos's. i also am receiving disability for minor injury's sustained during my previous enlistment, oh and i have a little one (baby) on the way. any info you could provide would be most apreciated

Answer
Chris:

You may or may not be eligible for a lateral move.  It will depend on what the strength of your old MOS is right now, and what the strength of the cook MOS is.  I'm guessing that the Corps ALWAYS needs Helo Mechs, unless your particular helo has been retired.  In that case, you might be ok.

A bigger stumbling block for you will be the disability.  If you are drawing 10 percent or more, you will have to go through a huge pile of paperwork, give up your disability payments, and pretty much state that you'll never claim that again.  That's what it will boil down to.

Talk to a recruiter, but I think the disability thing is going to be your biggest stumbling block at this point.

Expertise

Questions relating to US Marine Corps; rank, awards, uniforms, career choices. I can also help people spot and expose fakes (people pretending to be Marines or have awards they didn`t earn). Considering the Marines as a career? Or another branch, like the Air National Guard? Drop me a line. HOWever..know that I am NOT a recruiter. I can offer my expert opinion and advice, but can't (and won't) over rule what a recruiter says, they are the 'on duty' expert.

Experience

Field Radio Operator: MOS 2531. Served as a Platoon Sergeant in a Communications Platoon assigned to MEU Service Support Group 24 (Special Operations Capable). Did a hitch in the Army reserves as an 11B (Infantryman), 3 years. Finished out my career in the Air National Guard as a BioEnvironmental Engineer MOS 4B3X1, did that for a few years.
