Question
I am currently a professor of construction management and hold two masters degrees (civil engineering & business managemnt) from Virginia Tech. I have ~ 15 years experience in the construction management field (some of which includes working on Corps projects) and 5 years teaching the same subject at an accredited university.
I am also 40 years old (DOB 7-7-68) and have not served previously.
I am interested in attending OCS through a reserve unit (Army, Navy, AF) this summer.
1. Is this possible if I wait to do basic this summer (I have summers off) given the time commitment and my age?
2. Is there potential for direct commission in this discipline?
3. How are the training programs following OCS conducted for reserve units?
4. Is a higher rank than 2nd LT upon completion of OCS possible given my credentials?

Thanks

Answer
At this point, you are too old to attend OCS, the cuotff is 35, buta waiver can be granted.  Guard would require basic training and one weekend a month for OCS. You would not be able to limit it to the summers.  The AF or navy would not even be an option for you due to age. Sorry.

There are no direct commission available except for Lawyers and Doctors.

We do have a national Guard recruiter on campus at VA Tech.  He is colocated with the ROTC I believe.  Speak with him to see if there are other options, but I do not believe you would be granted an age waiver, but I am not the final authority.  Just based on my 5 years recruiting for the Virginia Guard.

Thanks for your intrest

Good luck

Expertise

I am a National Guard recruiter , been doing it for seven years and am a subject matter expert on qualifications for National Guard and I keep up to date on Regular Army regs and programs. I was in the Navy for 4 years and have 13 years in the Guard. I will not sugar coat my answers to you. They are usually short and to the point. If you need more in depth, ask me. Because each situation is different, alot of times you need to actually talk to a recruiter and let them evaluate your situation in person, by looking at your documents, issues etc. If I suggest this, it would be in your best interest to do so. Finally...thank you for your interest in serving this great nation of ours. Very few people can actually make the cut to serve let alone choose to do so. So thank you for wanting to and hopefully you will get a chance. Whatever branch you choose, thank you and good luck.
