QuestionCynthia Bedell,
How likely is it to get an OCS waiver for reckless driving.
The reckless driving originally pertained to a DUI but was
dropped to a lesser charge? Is it possible to appeal a
decision? What steps can be taken. I have two bachelor
degrees and am interested in serving but I do not want to
go enlisted. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Best regards,
Ash
AnswerDear Ash --
Unfortunately, in the current environment, I do not know whether the board would approve a waiver for reckless driving so you could go to OCS.
You best chance would be to apply for enlistment with an OCS rider, and if they do not approve your waiver, you do not sign your enlistment package at MEPS.
Understand that with an OCS rider, you must still perform well in basic training to "earn" your spot in the OCS class. If you do not perform well enough in basic, you will be compelled to serve your time in your alternate enlisted specialty. If this possibility does not suit you, do not enlist even with an OCS rider.
An alternative path to a commission is to go back to grad school, and attend Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) classes and training at your college. You would also train each summer, and when you completed your ROTC training, you would earn your commission as a second lieutenant. Your reckless driving would have to be adjudicated for you to receive a security clearance and your commission. however, this path guarantees you would not have to serve as an enlisted man if your training does not go well.
Good luck to you. please write back, if you have additional questions, or want to discuss other options.
