Question
I am 39 years old and I was honorably discharged from the Navy at 15 years w/an RE-R1 reentry code.  I got out for financial opportunities that didn't pan out.  I've been out for 5 years and am considering re-enlisment in the Navy.  Is this a possibility anymore?

Answer
Dear Randal -

Yes, if the Navy still needs your specialty and you still meet the fitness standards, you can re-enlist in the Navy.

Two cautions:

One, you will have to attend military initial entry training in some form.

Two, you are unlikely to return at the same rank you held when you were discharged.

However, if you do not retain rank, you can ask for accelerated promotions, due to your prior service.  If you want to change specialties, you can do so, since you will have to attend refresher training in any case.

Good luck to you.  Thank you for your service.
