Question
hey,my boyfriend is currently think off signing up,but I'm just intrigued as to how the whole process from signing up to starting your training should be, he's convinced he'll be starting training in less than 2 months, is this true or is it going to be longer/shorter? thank you, Laura

Answer
Dear Laura --

The whole enlistment process can be as short as a few weeks or it could be longer than a year.

If a recruit wants to enter the service quickly, is fully qualified (does not need any waivers), and basic training schedules align, they can be heading off to training in a few weeks.

If a recruit wants to make a commitment now, and lock in a job and bonuses, but take some time off before entering, they can join via the deferred entry program.  This program allows them to complete their enlistment process and sign their contract now, then report for basic training up to a year later.

Any individual enlistment could fall between these two extremes.

Enlistments that require waivers can take far longer.

Good luck to you and your boyfriend.
