Question
I wondered how realistic would it be for me to join the Air Force as an Officer if I have foreclosure on my credit and couple of items in collections? I am 29 with a degree in Computer Information Systems. I'm married with 2 children. I am very interested in the Air Force and wanted to know what I needed to do to join as related to my credit issues. Other than my credit issue, my background is completely clean as well as my health. I do know I have to lose weight which is not a problem. Thank you in advance for you help.

Answer
Hi TJ,

You cannot join the military (either enlisted or as an officer) if you have items "in collection."

This is because it is a crime in the military for a military member to pay their just debts in a timely manner. See http://usmilitary.about.com/library/milinfo/mcm/bl134-11.htm and Air Force Instruction 36-2906 at: http://usmilitary.about.com/od/afreg/p/afi362906.htm

The Air Force most certainly doesn't want to accept you, only to have to court-martial you a few months later because of unpaid debts.

As for the foreclosure, it depends. All officers require a security clearance, and a security clearance can be denied due to some foreclosures, especially if it was a result of financial irresponsibility. For details, see: http://usmilitary.about.com/od/theorderlyroom/l/blsecfinance.htm
