Question
I want to join the navy but i have only a G.E.D and no college credits is there a way to just with just a G.E.D?

Answer
Hi Charles,

See my article at: http://usmilitary.about.com/od/joiningthemilitary/a/enleducation.htm

The Military categorizes GEDs as a "Tier II" education category. The Department of Defense (DOD) limits the number of Tier II recruits who can join at a maximum of 10 percent. Each of the services have set their own standards (within the DOD requirements).

During the last recruiting year, 96.4 percent of all new Navy recruits were Tier I (high school diploma, or at least 15 college credits). That means that out of the (approximately), 38,485 new active duty recurits the Navy accepted, only about 1,385 were allowed to enlist with a GED. I can pretty much guarantee that all of those applicants probably scored *very* high on the ASVAB (80 or higher).

Why do the services do this? Because they have years and years of studies that have definatively shown that Tier I recruits are almost twice as likely to sucessfully complete their first enlistment, as Tier II recruits. It's hard to argue with statistics.
