Question
My boyfriend and I are both Active Duty in the Navy. We plan on getting married in the future and I want to make sure I can do everything I can now to keep us close and make our process into married life a smooth one (as possible!). I am at my permanent duty station in Port Hueneme, CA and I'm an E3 while he is at his in San Diego, CA and he is soon to be an E4. I wanted to know what the process was to get married correctly without asking so many questions to my squad leader and up.

Thank you for your time, your input is much appreciated.

Answer
Hi Becca,

You may wish to read my articles about military couples at: http://usmilitary.about.com/od/familydomestic/a/militarycouples.htm and http://usmilitary.about.com/od/army/a/dualmilitary.htm

You may also wish to read my article about Family Care Plans (in case you ever decide to have kids) at: http://usmilitary.about.com/cs/genfamily/a/familycare.htm

Military members don't have to get permission, or do anything special to get married (except for members who marry foreign nationals overseas). You get married just as any civilian does. See my article at: http://usmilitary.about.com/od/familydomestic/a/marriage.htm

Once you are married, you simply take a certified copy of your marriage certificate to your personnel division, and they update your records.

Of course, while not required, it's always a good idea to keep your supervisory chain "in the loop" about what is happening in your life.

Hope this helps!
