Question
I just read your post about enlisted members trying to transfer between branches of the military. I was wondering if there is any way a commissioned officer could transfer from the army guard to the air guard. Thanks for the help.

Answer
Hi Matt,

It's not possible for an enlisted member to transfer from one active duty service to another (except for a few minor exceptions).

It is possible for a commissioned officer to transfer from one active duty branch to another active duty branch (see DOD Instruction 1300.04 at: http://usmilitary.about.com/od/publicationsregulations/p/i130004.htm).

It's also possible for military personnel (officers and enlisted) to transfer between one reserve componant to another, or from reserves to active duty (or vice-versa). Reference is DOD Instruction 1205.19 at: http://usmilitary.about.com/od/publicationsregulations/p/i120519.htm

However, for commissioned officers, such requests are generally only approved if it is determined that the transfer is in the obvious best interests of both services involved. The (very few) cases I've seen approved involved medical doctors who had a specific skill that the other service needed badly.

The way the process works is that you would see an Air National Guard officer accessions recruiter. If the Air Guard decides that they want you bad enough, the recruiter will help you prepare and submit a DD Form 368, "Conditional Release." This first has to be approved by the Army National Guard. If approved, it then has to be approved by the Air National Guard.

Hope this helps!
