Question
I got an recode of 3 and a separation code of JFL in the Army. This was due to stress fractures that have since healed. Im in the process of signing up for the Navy(recruiter has sent X-rays, letters from 3 podiatrist saying that I can go back into service and she also wrote a letter for me). She said there should be no problem and that my waiver should get approved by BUMED. Is she correct in saying that or should I be worried?

Answer
Sarah,

A Separation Code of JFL means exactly, "Physical disability. Entitled to severance pay."
The regs say that "Individuals with an RE Code of "3" can normally reenlist in the Army or another Service, but will require a waiver to be processed."

The Navy Bureau of Medicine and Surgery (BUMED) is the headquarters command for Navy Medicine. Your recruiter will send your waiver request the Navy Surgeon General's office.  The medical experts there review your application package and make a determination.

Because your medical condition that caused you to be discharged is normally temporary, you have a very good chance of getting a waiver.  Stress fractures usually heal with time and rest and take about 3 to 4 months to completely heal.  The Army needs workers and couldn't waste 3 - 4 months without you on the job, so it's simply cheaper for them to discharge you until you heal.

I doubt that you'll have any problem.
Thanks for wanting to continue serving.
Colonel H
