Careers: Military--Army, Navy, Airforce, Marines, Coast Guard/moral waiver questions

Question

First, thanks for doing this!  It's a great help to so many people.

First question-- my husband would like to become an officer for the Navy.  He is currently in college working on his BS in mechanical engineering with straight A's in physics and calculus as well as his other classes. He would like to join now so he can take part in one of the navy scholarship programs so school is paid and he is commissioned upon graduation.  Really he would love to become a nuclear propulsion instructor. Here is my question: he has 2 misdemeanors from over 5 years ago so will that automatically disqualify him from becoming an officer or is there a chance for a waiver?

Second question--how are waivers made?  In other words where does the info come from that proves he has become a better person?  What is required for a waiver?

Thanks!

Answer
Hi Callie,

He will require a "moral" waiver. For details about the waiver process, see my article at: http://usmilitary.about.com/od/joiningthemilitary/a/moralwaivers.htm
