Question
Rod,
Hopefully this isn't too long. I know of a person who received his parents signature when he was 17 (junior in hs) to join the il national guard. This past summer (june to august) he completed his basic training for MOS 31b at FLW. He seemed to do very well, made it through basic, etc. Seems as though, he is not in high school anymore, and has to get his GED (obviously, before he reports to AIT at the end of may 2010. Furthermore, he does not seem motivated, has not found employment since returning, etc. I am very worried, can the ng help him, is there a program for him (like the APS at Ft. Jackson)? Any advice would be good. He needs to stay in, I can't see him doing anything else, he needs direction and needs to get out of where he is living, etc.

Answer
Hi Karie,

He's going to (at least) have to get his GED, or face a possible involuntary discharge. When he was accepted for enlistment as a junior, it was on the condition that he complete his high school education. Even if he gets his GED, his commander may decide not to retain him.

I'm afraid I don't know of any Army National Guard program. He should check with his immediate supervisor to see what he can do. In short, it's up to him.
