Careers: Military--Army, Navy, Airforce, Marines, Coast Guard/ACL Reconstruction and Meniscus repair

Question
Hi Mr. Powers,
I underwent arthroscopic knee surgery to repair a torn ACL and a cracked meniscus approximately 4 months ago. I now have full range of motion in my right knee and I am back in the gym rebuilding my leg strength.
I have asked my recruiter repeatedly if this would require me to get a medical waiver and he told me it probably will not because it is a common injury amongst civilians.
I also have done all of the research I possibly can and its seems 50/50 some people say they didn't need a waiver while some said they did.
When I last visited my orthopedic surgeon, he explained to me that I should wait at least a year post-op. I have submitted all of my medical documents to my recruiter.
Personally my knee feels good after 4 months post-op and its only going to get better, especially with more motivation.
I was basically wondering if these conditions would automatically disqualify me? I've read on the physical exam and I can complete the required excersises without any problems.
Any information you can give me would be most helpful. Thank You

Answer
Hi Christopher,

It's basically up to the examining doctor at MEPS, who will be required to decide whether or not he/she feels the injury could interfere with future military training or duties.

However, assuming, after MEPS examines your civilian medical records concerning this issue, it's been my experience that MEPS will probably pass you, if you have full range of motion.
