Question
I have been wanting to join the Air Force for about a year now. Unfortunately I got arrested over the summer for a unlawful possession of marijuana. I currently have an ACD and it will end Nov. 17 next year.  I know because of this I will need a waiver.  What are my chances of getting a waiver?  I have a 3.4-3.5 in school, will have finished 83 credits by next semester, am an Eagle Scout, and part of a nationally recognized fraternity. I feel that my chances are slim to none.  It has led me to feel depressed, and criminalized. This was something I really wanted to do.

Answer
Eric,
I'm not going to lie, you may have a bit of an uphill battle. The Air Force is the second pickiest service to get into besides the Coast Guard. Any type of drug charge may hurt your chances tremendously. Not to mention I believe on the questionaire that you will have to fill out, it asks if you have smoked any marijuana or done any type of drugs within the last 12 months. If you say no, your going to get in trouble for lieing on a government form due to the fact they will run a background check on you. My advice to you is be completely honest and don't lie to your recruiter.. Any chance you have you will have to be open about it.  My advice to you is talk to a recruiter and tell them what you did and don't be afraid. The military understands people screw up, that's common nature for almost anyone. Just remember keep your head up.
I hope that I was able to answer your question, if you have any other questions please let me know.
Thanks,
Eric
