Question
I know you were in the Army National Guard (as I am Air Force active duty) but I'm sure this question, and your answer can apply across the board....I am stationed in Germany right now, but was thinking about doing Palace Chase. Is that possible to do even though I am overseas? Or would I have to wait until I got back to the states to join the Guard? And if so, is there any way around this so that I can join the Guard?

In addition, for those who do transition from active duty, to Guard, is their enlistment longer, or do they serve the duration of what was left from their time on active duty?

Thank you

Answer
When you discharge from the Air Force, you can talk to a transition recruiter to enlist in the Air Guard, you just have to know where you will live in the states.  If the AF does not offer this option, you will have to wait to return to the states.  You cannot transition to the Guard until your active contract is up.  The AF does not release Airmen to join a reserve force.

Expertise

I am a National Guard recruiter , been doing it for seven years and am a subject matter expert on qualifications for National Guard and I keep up to date on Regular Army regs and programs. I was in the Navy for 4 years and have 13 years in the Guard. I will not sugar coat my answers to you. They are usually short and to the point. If you need more in depth, ask me. Because each situation is different, alot of times you need to actually talk to a recruiter and let them evaluate your situation in person, by looking at your documents, issues etc. If I suggest this, it would be in your best interest to do so. Finally...thank you for your interest in serving this great nation of ours. Very few people can actually make the cut to serve let alone choose to do so. So thank you for wanting to and hopefully you will get a chance. Whatever branch you choose, thank you and good luck.
