Careers: Military--Army, Navy, Airforce, Marines, Coast Guard/Army Biochemist 71B

Question
I earned a Masters in Biochemistry in 2008 and am applying for a commission as a biochemist (71B).
I am prior service: Army 1996-2000, Honorable Discharge, Reentry Code: 1

However, I expect that the process is extremely competitive given that a lot of biochemists are seeking jobs now and I doubt (though I hope I am wrong) that the Army needs biochemists like it needs nurses or physical therapists. I don't know how many applicants the Army gets or how many slots are available each year.

If I am not selected for the 71B position this year, I do not know what further options are available.

Could I be selected in a different position?

I might have to repeat the process, but I don't want to keep imposing on individuals to write letters of recommendation or serve as references.

Answer
Adam,
Are you talking about a Direct Commission or via OCS?

I hate to sound like I'm passing you off, but the recruiters are the only ones who gets the numbers of current job openings.  That's so they can advise OCS applicants as to what MOS to apply for so they have the best chance of being accepted.

Don't be too sure about the career field being overcrowded.  A recent report I read about graduating students, Biochemists didn't even mention seeking employment via the military.  Your Masters's Degree makes you extremely competitive, almost a shoe-in.

Should the 71B career field be full, your recruiter can tell you where the greatest number of openings are.  You may find something else that interests you.  All that's required for OCS is a Bachelor's Degree (in anything).

Best of luck,
Colonel H
