Question
I'm currently a freshman in college with a strong interest in the Navy. My goal is to become an officer in surface warfare and hopefully command a ship. What major do you suggest I take in college to get on the right path? Whatever major I take, I plan on receiving a master's degree immediately after receiving my bachelor's degree.

At least you're thinking, that's better than most.  A lot of kids wait until they graduate and then start looking for a job.

The military doesn't care what your degree or your GPA is, just as long as you have a Bachelor's Degree.  That shows them you have the determination and dedication to see a job through to completion.  My communications squadron commander has a college degree in forestry, and my logistics squadron commander has a degree in music.  Since you're still undecided as to a major, knock out all your general education requirements first.  Maybe in another year or so you'll decide upon a major.

Surface Warfare is where it's at.  All the Captains and Admirals (except submarines) come from SW.  Meanwhile check into this website:  http://www.navy.com/careers/officer/surfaceships/
It may give you an insight as to what subjects my be of use.

It sounds like you have a good plan.  Get you Master's Degree out of the way early.  It can be difficult to do while you're in the Navy.

You'll enjoy the Navy.  It really is an entire new way of life, not just a job.
