Question
I have recently entered a plea deal for a deferred sentence on a misdemeanor DUI. I was planning on trying to get into OCS in the USCG after I graduated from college Fall '11. I want to be a pilot. Im wondering what ramifications this offense will have on my entrance or career field opportunities. I also had a misdemeanor Minor In Possesion of Alcohol charge when I was 20. I am 24 now. Thanks for your help,  Alex

Answer
Hello Alex,
Ok, this could certainly affect your enlistment into the Coast Guards due to the fact we are a Law Enforcement agency for the most part. We fall under the Department of Homeland Security and we have stricter limitations that other branches of the military. My suggestion to you is to contact a recruiter as soon as you can. Alcohol and the Coast Guard is not a good mix if you get an alcohol offense the first time you have to attend a lot of courses in regards to alcohol if you get a second alcohol related offense you are normally processed for seperation.
But like I said contact your local recruiter as soon as you can and they will be able to assist you even further. If you have any other questions please let me know.
Thanks,
Eric
