About Aaron Shifferly
Expertise I am currently an active duty Army Captain in the Military Police Field. I have been enlisted (Military Intelligence) and attended The United States Military Academy at West Point. I can answer questions related to the Army, posting, jobs, lifestyle, workings... pretty much anything you can throw at me with the exception of very specific recruting or medical questions. I have no expertise in what it takes to get in the military other than the fact that I, myself, joined at one point in time.
Experience I have experience in both deployed and garrision environments as a Military Police Officer.
Education/Credentials Bachelor of Science in Arabic and French from United States Military Academy at West Point.

Expert: Aaron Shifferly - 11/3/2009
Question From what I have read on this and other websites, I can see that my situation isn't necessarily unique. I'm 23, hold a BA in Politics, and am enlisted in the Marine Corps. While the primary reason for enlisting is irrelevant at this point, a secondary reason was to gain an understanding and appreciation for the enlisted side of the military.
I am ready to take my career to the next level, and pursue my personal and professional development as an officer. What, sir, are my options for pursuing OCS, both as a Marine and considering an Inter service Transfer to another branch, Army specifically.
My goal is to pursue a commissioned career within civil or public affairs. What are your recommendations? I appreciate your advice.
Answer I dont know the Marine Corps' procedures for accepting candidates for OCS, but I can say that the way for you to go into the Army would be to let your term of service with the Marines expire and then join the Army with an OCS option in your contract. Then you go off to OCS here. As far as the public/civil affairs.. those aren't branches you can go into right away. They are special branches in the Army and require you to be a 1LT (P) or junior Captain to apply for. On acceptance you go and do that course and are a CA/PSYOPS officer for the rest of your career. I recommend you do what is going to make you happy. I think you should definitely go officer and consider carefully the branch you want to do that in. I think the Army is great, but that's just my opinion.
