Question
I was wondering if my medical past history might disqualify me to join the Navy. I am currently 18 years old with a H.S. diploma. Between the ages of 8 to 10 years I had two surgeries, one on my left foot an another on my right upper thigh. My  condition is called "fibrous dysplasia" it is mild and my doctor cleared me many years ago as far as limiting my abilities or any activity. I talked to him about joining the Navy and he said it would be fine. He also wrote me a letter just in case. This condition basically makes "specific bones" weak. In my case i only had it on my left foot "outer small bone" and on my right "thigh bone". I am able to play sports, run, work out and do anything I want to do basically I am not limited to anything. Will this condition keep me for enlisting?
Thank you in advance for answering my question.

Answer
It is doubtful you would be able to, but I would go thru the motions to see if they will accept you.  You will need all the Dr notes you got on what surgeries you had and the outcomes as well as prognosis.  tehn call a recruiter and meet with him to start the process.

good luck.

Expertise

I am a National Guard recruiter , been doing it for seven years and am a subject matter expert on qualifications for National Guard and I keep up to date on Regular Army regs and programs. I was in the Navy for 4 years and have 13 years in the Guard. I will not sugar coat my answers to you. They are usually short and to the point. If you need more in depth, ask me. Because each situation is different, alot of times you need to actually talk to a recruiter and let them evaluate your situation in person, by looking at your documents, issues etc. If I suggest this, it would be in your best interest to do so. Finally...thank you for your interest in serving this great nation of ours. Very few people can actually make the cut to serve let alone choose to do so. So thank you for wanting to and hopefully you will get a chance. Whatever branch you choose, thank you and good luck.
