Careers: Military--Army, Navy, Airforce, Marines, Coast Guard - Military Discharge / Security Clearance

Expert: Rod Powers - 11/8/2009

Question
I was in the Air Force for 6 months 19 days when I got discharge for "personality disorder". My DD214 says my character of service was "HONORABLE" with separation code of "JFX" and reentry code of "2B".  I was 20 years old, this was 7 years ago.
Situation:
I was an excellent airman and was among the top students in my tech school (EOD) when I was discharged.  The reason for my discharge was while in the military I converted religions to marry a woman and my family made steps to disown me for my religious decision.  I went to my MTL's and chaplans to get help and found them to be of little assistance which made me upset with the military.  I began requesting emergency leave which was denied on the basis of my tech school not allowing it (what they told me).  Eventually I demanded to see a mental health professional as I was emotionally falling apart and told my MTL's I was very depressed.  The AF sent me off base to an area hospital for 9 days where I met with mental health professionals who stated I had temporary situational depression caused by my family situation.  I returned to base and my first sergeant asked me if I would like to meet with the training commander to see about my options including leaving the AF as he knew my family is and was the most important thing in my life.  The CO offered me a temporary leave which I declined (regrettably at this point I was too mad with the AF to take the offer) and asked to be discharged to attend to my family problems.  Several days later and a few interviews with the first sergeant later the commander informed me he would discharge me.
Question:
I am now applying for a federal government job that requires a "secret" clearance.  Assuming I meet all other qualifications for the job will my military discharge disqualify me from obtaining the clearance?

Thanks in advance!

Answer
Hi Drew,

It probably won't have an impact. The discharge was characterized as "honorable," and for SECRET clearances, they are primarily concerned with issues that have happened within the past five years.
