Question
Hi i am currently enrolled in paramedic school in michigan.  I am interested in possibly becoming a medic in the military.  I am wondering if you could tell me about them in any or all of the branches.  can you enlist and be guaranteed a job as a medic? what all do you do combat wise? etc.    I'd like to get some information from someone with military knowledge. I am not comfortable at this time going and talking to a local recruiter, thanks

Answer
Hi Arron,

Only four of the five active duty branches have active duty enlisted medics. The Marine Corps does not (The Marines use Navy Medics).

You may wish to read the following military medic job descriptions:

Army: http://usmilitary.about.com/od/enlistedjobs/a/68.-uL-.htm

Air Force: http://usmilitary.about.com/od/airforceenlistedjobs/a/afjobmedical.htm

Navy: http://usmilitary.about.com/od/enlistedjob1/a/hm.htm

Coast Guard: http://usmilitary.about.com/library/milinfo/cgjobs/blhs.htm

Only the Army and the Navy have "combat medics." In the Army, those in MOS 68W can be selected to be assigned to Army ground combat units (such as Infantry units) to perform battlefield first aid. In the Navy, selected HMs can be assigned to Marine Corps ground combat units for the same purpose.

The Air Force also has pararescue. See: http://usmilitary.about.com/od/airforceenlistedjobs/a/afjob1t2x1.htm medical specialists who are trained for combat operations.
