Question
Hi,
I have been talking to a recruiter for a few weeks now, and I'm planning on taking my ASVAB test this upcoming week. So far, the recruiter has been very knowledgeable, but there was a few questions that I was unsure about asking in person.
I am 21 years old, and when I was 17 (I was a trouble maker) and I was arrested with marijuana (I've never done any other drugs) and a switchblade. I was facing a misdemeanor possession charge and "unlawful use of a weapon" (I didn't do anything to anybody, but I had it on me), but was offered a 2 month rehabilitation option to bar the charge from my juvenile record. The possession & weapon charge is not on my record (because I completed the rehabilitation program), but the rehab stay is. I was curious as to if I should bring this up to the recruiters, or if I should let them ask me about it, or if I can even join based on this incident.
If you could help me out, I'd greatly appreciate it, I'm unsure of who else to ask.
Thank you for your time and service,
Kelsey

Answer
Kelsey:

You'll need to disclose EVERYTHING, period.   And, you'll need a waiver for prior drug use, as well as the arrest.   I realize the charges aren't on your record as convictions, but they DO exist and WILL be discovered.   So, disclose them now and get them out of the way, and you'll be fine.   Enlistment shoudn't be a problem, just a couple of additional pieces of paper.

Expertise

Questions relating to US Marine Corps; rank, awards, uniforms, career choices. I can also help people spot and expose fakes (people pretending to be Marines or have awards they didn`t earn). Considering the Marines as a career? Or another branch, like the Air National Guard? Drop me a line. HOWever..know that I am NOT a recruiter. I can offer my expert opinion and advice, but can't (and won't) over rule what a recruiter says, they are the 'on duty' expert.
