Question
Mr. Ernst,

I am 23 now and have a college degree. When I was 17 I plead no contest to a theft charge. I got deferred adjudication and was never officially "convicted." I know there is an extensive background check and I'm wondering if I'll be able to join the Coast Guard.  Since that incident I haven't received so much as a traffic ticket.  What are my chances of getting in?

Answer
Hello Jeff,
Quick and easy answer for you, you shouldn't have a problem due to the fact that you were under the age of 18 yrs old and were still considered a minor. As long as you were able to keep your nose clean you shouldn't have a problem. Granted we are pretty much a law enforcement agency and do have specific standards which are to be met. My suggestion to you is talk to a recruiter and be completely honest and don't lie about anything, because if you do lie, you will not be able to join.
If you have any other questions please let me know.
Thanks,
Eric
