Question
I was previously enlisted in the Navy and left honorably in 1987. I have since received both BA and MS degrees and have considered re-entering as an officer. I am 45 now but in good physical shape. Is there any possibility that I could re-enter as an officer....any waiver required?

Answer
Dear Dan --

It is possible that you could return to service at your age if you meet the fitness and medical requirements.

Since you have a bachelors degree, you could qualify for officer candidate training, upon completion of your basic training.  However, unless you have a special degree in a field such as medicine, law or divinity, it is unlikely you would be offered a direct commission.

If you served at least three years as an active duty sailor, then you should not need an age waiver to return to service.  The current maximum age to enter the service is 42.  However the maximum allowable age is 42 plus the number of years of active prior service, for anyone honorably discharged from prior service.

Please write back if you have additional questions.  Thank you for your service.
