Careers: Military--Army, Navy, Airforce, Marines, Coast Guard/Marine Corps Awards

Question
I left the Marines after almost 10 years service and am now going into the Army Reserves. I served with the 1st MARDIV in Desert Storm. Am I eligible to wear the 1st MARDIV patch as the combat unit patch (right side)?
Also, I earned a Navy/ Marine Corps Achievement medal in my last duty station. I went on terminal leave before it was awarded and they sent me the medal and the certificate to my home of record. It isn't on my DD214 as I left on terminal leave. How do I get this oversight corrected? Also, how do I find out if I am eligible to wear a NUC that was awarded to my unit while I was assigned there? Thanks and Semper FI!

Answer
Dan:

Technically, and according to army regs, you are not authorized to wear the 1st MarDiv patch, even though you rate it.  The reason?  Because the Marine Corps no longer wears the shoulder sleeve insignia.  However, many Marines that 'go army' typically disregard this regulation.   Your call on that one.

You can apply to the Board of Correction of Naval Records for an update to your DD-214, but it'll likely take 6-8 months for them to issue you the new DD-215.  Or, when you reenlist, take your Citation to your admin shop and just have them enter it into your records.

As far as the NUC goes, you'll need to show proof you belonged to the unit that it was awarded to if it's not on your DD-214.  And you can do the same thing as above.

The listing of unit awards can be found in the Awards Manual, NavMc 2922.

 Semper Fi and Good luck!

Questions relating to US Marine Corps; rank, awards, uniforms, career choices. I can also help people spot and expose fakes (people pretending to be Marines or have awards they didn`t earn). Considering the Marines as a career? Or another branch, like the Air National Guard? Drop me a line. HOWever..know that I am NOT a recruiter. I can offer my expert opinion and advice, but can't (and won't) over rule what a recruiter says, they are the 'on duty' expert.
