Careers: Military--Army, Navy, Airforce, Marines, Coast Guard/Retired and need hip replacement

Question
Good afternoon.  I have a question in regards to my retirement.  I just retired back in July 2009 and on my exit physical I told the Dr that my hip had really been hurting when I ran, but lately it has been hurting regardless of what I'm doing.  He documented it, but did not do any x-rays or anything.  So just recently I went back to a doctor for the same reason (has gotten much worse) and he took X-rays and now it appears that I will have to have a hip replacement.  I just recently started a new job with the Civil Service and I don't have any leave built up.  My question is...since I mentioned it at my exit physical shouldn't they have done the right thing then, and now is there any way that I could be put back on duty when I have the surgery and for my convalescent time which is going to be about six weeks!
Thank you,

Answer
Hi,

You can't be put back onto duty, but if you have a medical condition which is caused by or made worse by military service you may be eligible for medical care and/or disability compensation from the VA. For more information, visit http://www.va.gov

Hope this helps!
