Question
I am probably one of very few people with this situation.  I joined the North Carolina National Guard in 1985. I am a Desert Shield/Storm veteran.  I left the Guard and went Naval Reserve for about a year.  I left that and joined the Georgia Army National Guard (worked during 1996 Olympic games) and then back to North Carolina.  I did this until 2002.  In July, 2002 I joined the Active Duty with 16 years Military time for pay and 0 Active Duty years other than Deployment and training.  I am currently on Active Duty (deployed 03-04 and 09-10) and in January I will have 25 years of service for pay.  My questions with all of this are: When can I retire? Does my service in the National Guard for over 15 years count for retirement purposes other than for pay?  If I decide to leave Active Duty, can I retire immediately from the military?  Do you have a point of contact?  Thanks for your assistance.

Answer
Ok, you can retire with 20yr active, look on your PQR and find your ADSD, go 20yrs from there.

For Guard/reserve retirement, you can do it now, but you do not recieve any benefits until you reach age 60.  I do not know how you can retire reservist while in active duty.  I think you would have to get out of active and go back reserves or Guard.  Sounds like a trip to HR to figure that one out.  The base has a retirement counselor who can help you out.

Sorry about the confusion, I have seen people do all kinds of things when it comes to retirement, nothing would suprise me.  Reserve time cannot be "converted" to AD retirement, only your active duty deployments or AGR time.  You would think they would "compress" the time, but they do not.

Expertise

I am a National Guard recruiter , been doing it for seven years and am a subject matter expert on qualifications for National Guard and I keep up to date on Regular Army regs and programs. I was in the Navy for 4 years and have 13 years in the Guard. I will not sugar coat my answers to you. They are usually short and to the point. If you need more in depth, ask me. Because each situation is different, alot of times you need to actually talk to a recruiter and let them evaluate your situation in person, by looking at your documents, issues etc. If I suggest this, it would be in your best interest to do so. Finally...thank you for your interest in serving this great nation of ours. Very few people can actually make the cut to serve let alone choose to do so. So thank you for wanting to and hopefully you will get a chance. Whatever branch you choose, thank you and good luck.
