Question
I’m trying to get into the U.S. Navy but I need a waiver for orthotics. It was recommended to me when I was taking physical therapy for chondromalacia of patella or runners knee. I stop using them after therapy, and able to run 10 miles a day. What are my chances?
Note: I had a lateral release of the patella on both knees. Right knee was 3 years ago and left knee 2 years ago.

Answer
Dear Travis --

If you are no longer using orthotics, you will not need a waiver for them.  However, you will need a waiver for any knee injuries or surgeries you have had.

I cannot predict what your chances of receiving a waiver for the condition of your knees are because military doctors will have to determine whether you have adequate strength and stability for military duty.

Understand that you will go through the MEPS physical and they will find you disqualified because of your knees.  Then you will petition the medical board for a waiver due to the past injury/surgery on your knees.

Good luck to you.
