Careers: Military--Army, Navy, Airforce, Marines, Coast Guard/dental/medical waivers

Question
Hi Jason,
First of all, thank you for taking the time to review this question.
I would like to join the Marine Reserves after I am done with college in about 2 years, but I just have some questions you might be able to answer right now.
I broke my arm some years ago and had a plate with dissolving screws (not exactly sure how that works yet) put in to help it heal straight.  The arm is fine and doesn't bother me at all.  As I understand it, I have to get some type of waiver for this, right?
This next part is about dental stuff: I have a permanent bottom retainer against my teeth (but you can't see it, as it is on the inside of my mouth) and was wondering if I would have to get a waiver for that. And, my dentist says my bite is a little off, and I could have jaw surgery to help it, but he said it's not really necessary.  Would the MEPS dr.'s not like this, or do you think I would be able to pass?

Thank you again for your consideration.
Best-

Answer
Kari:

The arm thing doesn't sound like an issue, and it sounds waiverable.  The mouth/jaw retainer may be an issue, but then again, it might not.  That one, the MEPS folks will have to give you better information on.  I'd lean towards just a waiver, but sometimes you just don't know.  Talk to a Marine Corps recruiter and they'll be able to fill you in with some more information.

Expertise

Questions relating to US Marine Corps; rank, awards, uniforms, career choices. I can also help people spot and expose fakes (people pretending to be Marines or have awards they didn`t earn). Considering the Marines as a career? Or another branch, like the Air National Guard? Drop me a line. HOWever..know that I am NOT a recruiter. I can offer my expert opinion and advice, but can't (and won't) over rule what a recruiter says, they are the 'on duty' expert.
