Question
Ms. Bedell:

What do you see for the future of Chemical Operations Spec.74D? Is it a high demand MOS? Will there be Warrant Officers in this field in the future? Do you know anything about the promotion rate in this field. Are they needing more officers? By the way, I have a Master's in science degree. Any information you have concerning 74D would definitely be appreciated. Thank you.

Answer
Dear Steve --

The Chemical Operations Specialist is still needed by the Army.  Since the requirements for enlisting include skills in math and science, not many qualify for this specialty.

You should also consider the laboratory technician specialist, 68 series, either H or K depending on your interest.

As I mentioned in my other response, you may also be eligible for direct commissioning and entry into a physician's assistant or Nurse training program, with your advanced degree in science.

Your enlisted specialty can, but does not have to influence your warrant officer specialty, if you are interested in becoming a warrant officer.  Your enlisted specialty will have no influence on your commissioned branch.  That will be dictated primarily by the existing needs of the Army at the time of your commissioning, unless you are in a specialty medical training program, or other professional service (law, religion).

Again, please write back, if other questions or issues arise.  Good luck to you.
