Careers: Military--Army, Navy, Airforce, Marines, Coast Guard/AF commisioning/VA disability

Question
Let me get my background out of the way first. I was prior AF enlisted (did 8 years in ATC) and honorably discharged in 2006. I collect 20% VA disability based on a shoulder and wrist injury. Other than that my record is spotless (EPR's, awards, etc...). I am also confident I can pass any VA/MEPS physical. I will be graduating this August and would like to apply for commissioning programs, but am a bit unsure of; if I'm eligible, or how I go about becoming eligible.

Now, I reviewed the AFRSI36-2001 and saw that if you are collecting disability you are ineligible for any commissions or reenlistment. As I understand it there are no waivers either. But something I've seen on this board is that you can give up you VA disability benefits and then apply. I am wondering how successful this actually is? The process behind it? And if it will come back to bite me since I used VOCREHAB program to pay for college? Any tips or success stories? If I give up my VA benefits, will the AF even know I was receiving them while out?

Thanks for your time,
Jon

Answer
Jon,

I do not know how to do it, but you have to get the VA to drop the disability. From what Ive heard that its very difficult to get them to do. From my understanding is that the Air Force doesnt care if you WERE receiving them as much as the fact that you ARE receiving them. Thats why the AF requires that you are not receiving them at the time of commissioning.
